North Tazewell Business District Revitalization

As part of our commitment to revitalization, the Town of Tazewell coordinated a North Tazewell Downtown Plan Workshop on December 17-18, 2024. The workshop was brought to you through a planning grant we received through Virginia’s DHCD, similar to previous grants utilized during our Main Street revitalization effort. The primary goal of this workshop was to begin developing a plan and strategy for the North Tazewell business district located near the Tazewell Train Station and the former Bowling Alley. Area business and property owners participated in this session with our planning team, made possible through this grant. Work was recently completed in this neighborhood, which included repurposing the formerly vacant lot into the Clinch River Pavilion & River Walk. The pavilion serves as the home of the Tazewell Farmer’s Market and improves access to the Clinch River.

Feedback from this workshop and work performed by the planning team in the months that followed were completed with the goal of creating a solid plan of action for this area, which is outlined in the North Tazewell Revitalization Plan. The plan is now the basis of an application with Virginia’s DHCD for an additional grant to implement the plan. If awarded, the implementation grant will put the plan into action by providing facade grants to the participating business and property owners to make exterior improvements to their property to foster sustainable growth in this former industrial district.

As part of the implementation grant process, a series of public hearings will be held, as required by DHCD. The first will be held on Thursday, May 28, 2026, at Town Hall at 2:00 p.m. The second, and final, public hearing will be held on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. The public hearings give community members an opportunity to express comments or concerns regarding the project.
