Special Recognition
Mayor Buchanan congratulated the Tazewell Little League teams that have gone and are going to state level of competition.
Special Presentation Requests
Mike Tanck with Charter Communications came before Town Council to request the amended franchise agreement be approved for renewal. A public hearing was set for the August 8, 2017 Town Council meeting at 6:45 pm.
Daphne Murray and Clint Neal, from the Farm to Table committee, came before Town Council to request a $1,000 donation for their September 9 event. The requested money will be used for musical entertainment for the evening, and was approved by Town Council

Special Requests
Brian Allison, co-owner of Plum Creek Winery, made a special request from the Town of Tazewell to allow use of Main Street on July 8, 2017, for his ‘Bottoms Up Beer & Wine Festival’. Town Council voted to allow the event, which is required for events that include serving of alcohol. Mayor Buchanan also asked for a financial report after the event, so the impact of Main Street events on Main Street businesses can be assessed. You can find more information about this event here.
Public Comments
Greever Asbury came before Town Council to recommend that they acknowledge the extra efforts the Town’s public works employees put in for the Town of Tazewell. He cited examples from trash collection, Back of the Dragon, the Cruise-In’s, and other events, stating he felt they deserved recognition for going above and beyond their duties. Mayor Buchanan, along with Town Council, agreed, stating they do have wonderful employees, saying he recently saw William Asbury caring for the flowers on Main Street after hours.

Special Presentations
Kitty Barker, Executive Director of Heart of Appalachia, made a special presentation and budget request. Their mission is to increase tourism and they were proud to present their latest national commercial promoting southwest Virginia. They also presented their theme song, written and sung by Kaitlyn Baker of Pound, Virginia:
The Town of Tazewell also introduced the Business Directory to Town Council. The Business Directory is a new feature on our website that gives businesses, residents, and visitors quick access to information.
Listings are FREE to businesses within the corporate limits of both Tazewell and North Tazewell. Listings include key information about your business, links to your business and social media pages, including a photo and optional short video.
To kick start the process, fill out our online request form with information about your business. Once submitted, the web administrator, John Reeves, will process your request. You will receive an email confirmation, that includes login information you can use to make updates to your listing. Once your request has been processed, John will contact you to gather any additional information and to schedule an appointment to visit your business, if needed.

H.S. Caudill, VDGIF board member, spoke to Town Council about the Dunford Park trout stream program, expressing how proud Tazewell should be for moving forward with this youth related activity. More information about the youth-only fishing program can be found here.
Mike Dennis, Commonwealth Attorney for Tazewell County, presented an asset forfeiture donation check to Chief DeWitt Cooper for the Town of Tazewell Police Department for $27,645.
Mayor Donald Buchanan read the proclamation declaring the first week of April as “Local Government Education Week.”
Tazewell Today President, Irma Mitchell, presented Town Council with the Tazewell Today strategic plan for endorsement. Tazewell Today has made great strides in its two and one half years of existence in working to bring the Main Street area back to life. Irma thanked the Town Council and Town Manager, Todd Day, for their support during this revitalization.

Mayor Donald Buchanan recognized Susan Reeves for her work as the Sesquicentennial Committee Chairperson. 2016 marked the 150th anniversary of the incorporation of the Town of Tazewell, and was celebrated with several events throughout the year, including the creation of the commemorative Taztownopoly Monopoly game:
Police Chief DeWitt Cooper also recognized the outstanding service of Dennis and Jody Adkins, for their actions in helping apprehend a combative suspect who was struggling with Officer Woodard. The Adkins’ bravely stopped at the scene and assisted eight other officers in helping Officer Woodard.

Chief Dewitt Cooper introduced the newest police department member Joe Jesse, expressed his thanks to other department members for their quick response in saving lives during a recent collision, and recognized Donny Pruitt’s Public Works team, especially William Asbury, for his dedication to the Town of Tazewell and for going above and beyond his duties to help with events.

Mayor Donald Buchanan presented Town Manager Todd Day with a recognition letter from Senator Mark Warner to congratulate the Town of Tazewell for being named one of the twentieth safest communities statewide:
Shawn Durham, new CEO of the Four Seasons YMCA, updated the Town Council on the YMCA’s goals and new programs, thanked them for their continued support, and presented the Town Council members with badges as part of the current YMCA support campaign.
Larry and Claudine Blankenship then thanked the Town Council on behalf of their family for Council’s support for the community and for their continued leadership in the positive direction they have steered the Town.
And, Town Manager Todd Day unveiled plans for relocating the recycling bins and dumpsters to the lot beside of the Town of Tazewell EMS on Steeles Lane.
