National Fire Prevention Week wrapped up in Tazewell with a parade of area firefighters. 2022 marks the 100th anniversary of this annual awareness campaign and this year's theme is “Fire Won’t Wait. Plan your escape.” The Town of Tazewell Fire Department encourages all residents to plan and practice a home fire escape. Children, older adults, and people with disabilities may need assistance to wake up and get out. Advance planning can be crucial.
Tazewell celebrated the addition of a brand new mural on Saturday with the dedication of "Standing Tall and Proud: African American Heritage of Tazewell County." The Tazewell County Board of Supervisors commissioned the artwork and appointed a Citizens Courthouse Grounds Improvement Committee to work with mural artists and community volunteers to bring the project to life. The community and family members of those portrayed in the mural came together to celebrate the momentous occasion. Panels containing the biographical information for each depiction were installed in the adjacent courtyard overlooking the mural.
Portrayed in the mural are:
Lucian H. "Lou" Peery, James A. "Jimmy" Higginbotham, Jr., Jack Wayne Gravely, Minnie Holley Barnes, Hattie Holley Heath, Andrew M. Henry, Herman Russell Branson, Zirl Augustus Palmer, George Murray Dickerson, George Mills Dickerson, Lethia Cousins Fleming, James Knox Smith, Ebenezer Howard Harper, Sallie A. Witten, Samuel Harris, and Tazewell County Coal Miner, representing African American miners at work from 1883-1955 in Pocahontas, Boissevain, Bishop, Amonate, Jewell Ridge, and Raven, VA coal mines

Tazewell saluted area veterans with a special ceremony and Veterans Day parade. Guest speaker Alfred Wicks, whose 20+ year military career spanned the Gulf War’s Operation Desert Storm and then later Operation Iraqi Freedom, shared the impact of military service on veterans and their families. Alfred expressed the importance of community service, as well. The Fallen Warriors honor guard, that Alfred represents, provides many resources to military families, at no charge to them, and works to educate communities on issues facing our heroes.
The Town of Tazewell hosted its annual Christmas dinner for employees on Friday, December 16th at the Main Street Cafe's VIP Room. Santa made a special guest appearance, much to the children's delight, and several retirees were honored:
